Here we are. February. The month that beckons us all inside. Maybe it’s the colder weather; maybe it’s the shorter days. Even here in Florida, with the sun shining on Anna Maria Island, I feel drawn inside to warm my heart.

This time of year, I remember the cold Ontario winters. February is the shortest month, yet somehow always felt the longest. When I was in grade school, February brought the very mixed feelings of Valentine’s Day. Every year, my mother would buy us each a package of valentines to give out to our classmates. I remember picking out the most special ones for the friends that I liked the most. It was easy to give the love to my close friends.

As part of this ritual, my mother made sure that we passed out valentines to everyone in the class. I was less enthusiastic about giving valentines to some of the other kids.

Overall, I viewed this experience as a popularity contest. I noticed which classmates received the most valentines. Being shy and having low self-esteem, I always felt excluded from that group.

To make matters worse, both of my sisters were always in my class (I’m a triplet). So I had the added worry of, “Will I be liked as much as Colleen and Philomene?” The answer would be revealed when we counted our valentines!

As a child, feeling loved by others was always very important to me. The validation from the outside world made me feel valued. When I felt needy of this feeling, I would work very hard to get the validation I craved. It was an endless battle that consumed a lot of time and energy.

Now, I am grateful for the years and experiences that have brought me to my own self-love. It’s a place where I can be okay, even if someone outside of me isn’t showing up in love for me.

Our days are filled with events and happenings that serve to unveil parts of ourselves in every moment. Let’s strip away the coverings, step outside the picture and connect with the essence of life that is always present. Then step back into the picture while we are still connected to this essence that we all are.

There’s a verse from a beautiful song by Van Morrison entitled “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?” that I just love to sing...

This essence is you. It is love divine. As Nisargadatta Maharaj says, “You are the unborn and the undying.” Look for a moment of contentment where you feel you are safe and cared for. When anything is happening to you or around you, take the experience inward and allow life to be as it is. Then your life will become part of one heart joining for the sake of love to know itself again and again through your existence.

Love comes in different forms, all the many languages of the heart. Wherever we are in our lives, we always have the choice to open our hearts to the love that creates more of itself. I desire to let love lead the way. When we are connected to this love energy, then wherever we go and everything we do allows this love to touch the world and the universe responds.

Love, show yourself to me.
I know you are here,
Hiding behind all of the masks and events of the day.

Hidden beneath the feelings
That seem to be so real.
I know you are here.

You are the promise made at the moment of creation.
You are here, abiding in the Heart of the One.
Let me be the one to show myself to You.
Let me be the Truth revealed within.
Unveil the disguises that show me who I Am.

I reach for you,
Like a flower opening to the sunlight.
I open, like a book,
Each page turning to another moment
Sharing the story of the greatest love affair.

We are creating together, You and Me.
I hear you calling my name.
I know it as LOVE responding to itself.

I am yours for all eternity.
Use me, for I surrender my heart to you Now.
Let me continue to abide forever
In this loving embrace of each day,
For I Am LOVE.

We all want to be loved…Let’s just show up and be the love!
Be the valentine for everyone you meet…Be the expression of “I Love You!”

Meet each day with an open heart this Valentine’s Day and always.
