"The river that flows in you also flows in me."
~Kabir
As we journey along the chosen paths of this life, each of us will discover that our greatest responsibilities are not dictated by the roles we playmother/father, daughter/son, doctor, lawyer, Indian chief...Our first priority is simpleto remember that we are an extension of divine love; that who we are emanates from this core of unquestionable perfection.
Maintaining this connection can be difficult. Like a tunnel made in the sand, our doubts and false beliefs trick down, each grain blocking our light. It takes commitment and persistence to preserve a clear path.
That’s why I’ve committed myself to the daily practice of meditation. It helps me refocus and get back in alignment. Still, there are times when I allow myself to get pulled away by the busyness of ‘doing.’ That’s when I find myself caught in the throws of all those old, insecure feelings where I do not believe in myself. My pattern is to look for another, a father figure, to fill me up with what I believe I lackvalue, strength, self worth. |

I feel so blessed that my work as a spiritual counselor allows me to touch another as together we return to source for guidance and healing. Each client that comes to me for help offers me the gift of remembering why I am here.
As part of my work, I listen to the emotional pain of another as they unveil themselves. I am in awe of their willingness to reveal their fears and flaws, as they allow themselves to be raw and vulnerable. I hold a space, recognizing that we are one; each of them is me. I listen, not just with my ears, but also with my heart and my hands and I allow the divine Father to guide me. Trusting in the moment, together we uncover the mistaken beliefs that try to cover the eternal light of Truth.
It takes courage to trust what the heart tells us. It takes inner strength to release old patterns and false beliefs that are so deeply ingrained within us. In truth, it often is not the darkness we fear. For most, this constant companion is so familiar that we’ve actually grown comfortably attached to its presence in our lives.
No, it is the power of our own light that feels unfamiliar, awkward, and even dangerous. So we abandon ourselves and our connection to source and give away our power. Instead of turning inward, we look outside ourselves to the physical world in search of love and validation.
For most of us, this pattern was established when we were very young. As children, we looked to our dads for love, acceptance, safety and self worth. Some of us may not have had the most inspiring of fathers. Some did not have a dad in their lives at all.
As adults, we can perhaps find peace in knowing that our early relationship with our father no matter how challenging is part of our journey to divine Truth. From this place, we can one day find forgiveness and acceptance for our fathers and all their human frailties. From this place, we can also experience gratitude and appreciation for all the gifts our unique journey has given us.
For some, it is the love and support of a father figure who stepped forward to offer guidance compassion and understanding. For others, an absent father may have inspired you to be a better parent; or maybe life has brought a child into your life in some other way.
All you need to do is take a look around you to see that life provides countless opportunities big and small to shine your guiding light on a child. When we do the work to stay in balance in our lives and connected to source, then we allow divine light to be the guide. This is the greatest gift we can give to the children of this world and greatest blessing we bestow upon ourselves and humanity.
I smile this morning as I recall the words my husband has written in his Father’s Day card to his dad. He wrote, “As I assume the role as a father to my beloved wife’s children, who in my heart are my own, I feel the challenges of the title dad and all the wonderful things that come with it.”
We are all part of the energy of life that flows through all of humanity. Let’s use our creativity in this world to inspire others, whether it is our biological family, a group of people or one individual to remember who we really are.
